Jenny Mccarthy ignites a surge of viewers at the end of CNN’s Autism programming in honor of Autism Awareness day. While there were many valuable stories on CNN April 2nd, Jenny Mccarthy’s story seemed to attract the largest viewing audience, by a landslide.
I have a full voicemail box from friends, family, and colleagues who were curious if I had recorded the show and what my thoughts were about it. The main element that was controversial, seems to be the issue of Autism’s ‘treatability’. We know that Autism has no cure, but how do we describe children, like McCarthy’s son who went through various interventions and does not appear to display symptoms of Autism anymore? She calls her son ‘recovered’. Some feel that this may give false hope to parents. Others including myself, do see a subset of children who do appear to recover from Autism. I am not aware of the ‘recovery rate’ for Autism, but my guess is that the numbers are not high. However, it does not hurt to learn from the cases of children who have recovered.

Have you guys checked out this new DVD called Recovered: Journeys Through the Autism Spectrum and Back? It really changed my life watching the documentary. It shows that what Jenny McCarthy is saying is possible….RECOVERY is possible!!!
It is about 4 children who were diagnosed with Autism and follows them from diagnosis to complete Recovery! It is truly amazing what the children and their families went through and shows the therapy sessions along with interviews of the children, who are now teenagers.
It is really an amazing thing to see and gives hope to so many parents with children with autism. Check it out!
